R/C Drone (Plane) Registration

Remote ID is now in effect.  This requires one to fly at an FAA Recognized Identification Area (FRIA Sites) or have a Remote ID Module installed in their aircraft.

This link can assist with locating FRIA Sites - Visualize It

Some requirements to fly Drones (aka R/C Airplanes)

  • Register with the FAA.
  • Complete The Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST) course.

Register with the FAA

All drones must be registered, except those that weigh 0.55 pounds or less (less than 250 grams) and are flown under the Exception for Limited Recreational Operations.

Rules are here - https://www.faa.gov/uas/recreational_flyers

Registration requires an account to be setup and costs $5 which is valid for three (3) years.  The FAA requires that you label all drones with your registration number.

To register, access this link - https://faadronezone-access.faa.gov/#/

Make sure to download and print your registration document.

For additional details, see

TRUST Certificate

Another requirement is to take "The Recreational UAS Safety Test" (TRUST).  This is actually a course to provide the required knowledge needed to get the TRUST Certificate.

Use AMA's link to take the course and get the TRUST Certificate.  https://trust.modelaircraft.org/

Make sure to download and print the certificate.

A copy of this certificate must be presented if asked by law enforcement officers.

Remote ID Information

FAA's Remote ID requirements

The FAA's Remote ID requirements apply to all individuals operating unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) within the United States, regardless of whether they use the drones for recreational, commercial, public, or government purposes.  The rule applies to UAS weighing between 0.55 pounds (8.8 ounces) and 55 pounds.

The FAA has extended the Remote ID enforcement date to March 16, 2024.  The initial date was September 20, 2023.

Alternative remote identification

The rule does not apply when flying from FAA Recognized Identification Areas, FRIA.  In the link below, refer to § 89.115 Alternative remote identification, section (b) Operations at FAA-recognized identification areas.

AMA Badges

AMA created Badges for easier identification for flying sites. The two that are of interest here are FRIA and RIDE.  More details at https://www.modelaircraft.org/club-finder/legend#ride

FRIA Badge

Flying site is a FAA-Recognized Identification Area (FRIA - remote ID not required).  Airplanes weighing between 0.55 pounds (8.8 ounces) and 55 pounds can be flown without needing a Remote ID Module.

FRIA Badge

Flying site has a Remote ID Exemption from FAA (remote ID not required).  Also airplanes weighing less than 0.55 pounds (8.8 ounces) or 250 grams can be flown without needing a remote ID.

It does appear larger airplanes can fly under the RIDE exemption without Remote ID.

In the February 2025 edition of Model Aviation, on page 8 there is the article "FRIAS Versus RIDES Explained."  The article provides more in depth details regarding the exemption.  What is interesting is the statement in the article - "If a RIDE is issued in a public park, the club members and their guests can fly without Remote ID, but other park patrons unaffiliated with the club would still need a module."
